Based in Liverpool, Comics Youth CIC is the first organisation of its kind in the UK to provide holistic comics-based literacy and wellbeing projects for disadvantaged children and young people. Their mission is to provide a voice for hard-to-reach young people by giving them the tools to express themselves and improve their literacy, through creating comics and zines regarding salient community issues. By taking part in these creative workshops, they have the opportunity to write, illustrate and publish their own work, expanding their narratives and communicating ideas and topics that are important to them as a form of ‘social action’, to challenge the stigma which surrounds their identities.

The organisation have published a vibrant and colourful 100-page self-care zine curated by young people experiencing mental ill-health, an isolation zine and LGBT enamel pins. Their team is made up of five artists with backgrounds in illustration, digital art, publishing and comic book creation (graduated from LJMU/UOL) and they are currently in the process of refurbishing an art space for children and young people in the heart of the city centre. They have recently won three national awards from the Royal Society for Public Health for best Art and Health organisation in the UK. Their prices range from £5 – £15.
